TOEFL Scores Remain Valid for Only Two Years

time-going

According to the TOEFL® Registration Bulletin for this year, ETS will not verify or send reports of TOEFL scores older than two years.  Here is their official policy:

TOEFL scores remain valid for two years after the test date. Because language proficiency can change considerably in a relatively short period of time, TOEFL scores more than two years old cannot be reported or verified. If you took the TOEFL test more than two years ago and you need to submit scores to an institution or agency, you will have to take the test again.

Source: 2012-2013 Information and Registration Bulletin: TOEFL iBT Test, ETS, p.17 (Click here for PDF)

What does this mean exactly?

You may keep official reports of your TOEFL scores for more than two years, but you will not be able to use them at a school that will ask ETS to verify the scores. Also, ETS will not send a score report to anyone for a TOEFL score from more than two years ago.

Book Review: Official TOEFL iBT Tests (Volume 1), ETS, 2012

Official-TOEFL-iBT-Tests-ETS-vol-1

As a professional test prep teacher who constantly works with aspiring TOEFL® Test candidates, I always need more practice tests. Some preparation courses offer up to seven practice tests with their preparation books, like Barron’s and Cambridge, but – quite simply – they are not ETS, the company that makes the TOEFL Test! And McGraw-Hill plays up on this point quite well, slapping the ETS logo right on the top of the cover: “The People who Make the Test.”

This is the book’s biggest advantage. No matter how good the other companies’ content is, and no matter how insightful their tips and strategies are, when it comes to the actual full-length practices tests, they are simply trying to simulate the actual TOEFL test experience with their practice versions. ETS is actually giving you five real, authentic TOEFL tests, brought back out of retirement, not simulations. So factors like the overall level of difficulty, the accuracy or authenticity of the reading and listening material involved in some of the questions, or the actual topic selections for speaking and writing tasks, are all genuine and realistic with ETS Official TOEFL iBT Tests – Volume 1.

Book Review: The Official Guide to the TOEFL Test (4th Edition, 2012) by ETS

ets-guide-4th-ed

The Official Guide to the TOEFL® Test by ETS (4th edition, 2012) is perhaps the most important resource to start with for any TOEFL candidate. The company that makes the test provides their official guide to it, so all other preparation books are secondary. As a TOEFL teacher, I personally prefer the general approach and organized content of Longman, Bruce Rogers, or Cambridge preparation courses, however, the Official Guide from ETS remains the original source of information about the TOEFL, so it can not be overlooked.

YES, it is flawed with a poor explanation of the Listening Section and it’s question types, with examples that do not always match the skill being introduced, as well as no audio files to accompany sample listening transcripts (pp.127-140). And YES, they’ve padded the fourth edition with a “Writer’s Handbook for English Language Learners” (pp.575-635) and removed the very interesting statistical information about TOEFL score averages around the world, the kind of information that only ETS could provide (previously found in the third edition). And YES, the strategies and tips are somewhat limited, as are the number of sample questions provided with each question type…
